Welcome to The Learning Tech Skills. By accessing or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

About This Site

The Learning Tech Skills publishes reviews, comparisons and how-to guides for adults learning technology with their hands. We cover single-board computers, electronics starter kits, computer repair tools, network cable testers and the USB drives that turn an old laptop into a practice machine. Everything is written for beginners, with every term explained the first time it appears.

Electrical and Repair Safety

Opening a computer carries real risk. Shut the machine down, unplug it and disconnect the battery where the manufacturer allows it before you touch anything inside. A swollen, dented or punctured lithium battery can catch fire: do not pry it, puncture it or charge it, and take it to a battery recycling point. Static discharge can damage components, so use an anti-static wristband and work on a clear, dry surface. Small screws and parts are a choking hazard around children and pets.

Electronics kits and single-board computers are low voltage, but a miswired circuit can still overheat a part or burn a finger. Disconnect power before changing a circuit, and follow the kit's lessons for resistor values. Never connect a cable tester, starter kit or any learning project to household mains wiring or a live electrical circuit. Running cable through walls or attics may involve building codes and hidden wiring, so ask a licensed electrician when in doubt.

Back up anything you care about before you format a drive or install a new operating system, because those steps erase data. Do not practice on a computer you cannot afford to lose. Nothing on this site is a promise about an exam result, a job or an income, and certification requirements change, so check the exam objectives with the certifying body.
